About me (long):
I am an illustrator, designer, researcher, writer and educator based in London, UK. I am Reader in Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, UAL. Before becoming an academic I co-founded and lead the illustration and design collective Container (2002 – 2014).
My ongoing research arose from questions that emerged in my practice as an illustrator working with community groups on projects relating to place. I am now exploring connections between theorisations of community and the practice of illustration through projects that seek to understand and represent shared concerns. I am interested in producing and reflecting on work that connects people, local knowledge and image-making practices. How does illustration bring to light the concerns, interests and challenges of a community? Can illustration help us think about the conditions of sociability more generally? And how does this mode of engaging with others impact on the practice of illustration itself?
In order to respond to these questions I am overlapping illustration practice with political philosophy and drawing on ideas from human geography, ethnography and visual studies. I am currently working on a monograph that elaborates on these ideas which is due to be published in 2024.
Alongside this I am also working on a collaborative research project with ︎︎︎Dr Stephanie Black (Kingston School of Art) called ︎︎︎Colouring In, that examines the impact of illustration on areas of critical importance to global debates. Please visit our website to find out more.
My writing on illustration has been published in the ︎︎︎Journal of Illustration and I am a regular contributor to ︎︎︎Varoom magazine, the UK’s leading illustration magazine.
From 2002 – 2014 I practiced as a commercial illustrator and designer under the name Container in various collaborative constellations, completing a broad range of commissions for national and international clients.
I live in Hackney, East London.
